What Are We Modeling?

After tweeting out David Wees’ (@davidwees) brilliant post on how We Will Never End Bullying In Our Schools, Jennifer Marten @jenmarten, tweeted this video, “Children Learn What They Live” to add to the discussion.

It reminds me of a quote from Larry Cuban, “how we teach often becomes what we teach” (I have written a previous post, How We Teach IS What We Teach, based on this quote ). We teach the official curriculum; but it is often the unofficial curriculum which we model from which our children truly learn.

By doing what WE are doing, what are we teaching our children today?

Thank you Jen and David.

  1. As Marshall McLuhan said, “The medium is the message.” I was delighted last year by an article about me written by a senior journalism student. We were going through a rather routine lunchtime interview when a young student came in to inquire about their grade. I reassured them that they didn’t have to be perfect but that I wanted them to give me their best. What was printed in the school newspaper was nothing related to the Q and A of the interview but a supportive piece focussed only on the interaction between myself and one concerned student. The journalism student intuitively identified the learning that was occurring and it had absolutely nothing to do with the “Protestant Reformation” or the latitude of the Tropic of Capricorn.

  2. That video sure captures the impact of modeling! Yes, we do teach who we are in so many ways. Children are so perceptive. Their love for their parents only leaves them that much more impressioned by them. We have to remember that.
